When You Believe Your Purpose Can’t Also Pay You Well

Do you carry a quiet fear that if something is truly your calling, it isn’t supposed to make you money — that somewhere between purpose and provision, you have to choose one? I hear this belief often, and I want you to know two things: you’re not alone in carrying it, and it isn’t true. I was reminded of this recently on a coaching call, talking with a mother of four who had built a strong career in business and finance — one that paid well — but couldn’t shake the feeling that her lucrative job was at odds with her motherhood. What I shared with her is something every one of us needs to hear.

Money doesn’t pollute a calling — it can be part of it

Years ago, before we had online streaming, I taught a live bootcamp for people in the healing arts — about a hundred and fifty of us were offering programs, but I was pretty much the only one there making money. Everyone else carried the belief that real, spiritual, purposeful work and money don’t mix. As long as you hold that belief, you’ll keep attracting people — or opportunities — with no money to offer you. The moment you shift it, you start attracting the ones that do. Providing for your family through well-paying work is highly spiritual. It is deeply purposeful for this season of your life, and you don’t have to apologize for it paying you well.

Affirmation: I make my purpose spiritual, and I let it provide for me.

When something feels forced, look for the choice underneath it

Big life transitions — a separation, a return to work you didn’t plan for — can feel like something was forced on you rather than chosen. That’s real, and it’s worth naming. But underneath it, you almost always did choose things that led you here, which means you still have choices now. Switching “I was forced into this” to “I am choosing this” doesn’t erase what’s hard about it. It just hands you back your freedom inside of it. And if you believe, as I do, that God honors your commitment as a mother — or to whatever role has shaped you most — then trust that you’ll be given what you need to make this season work, and that it is purposeful, even now.

Affirmation: This is my choice, and I trust it is purposeful for exactly where I am.

Your purpose is allowed to change

We don’t have just one life purpose. You might have ten over the course of your life, and right now, being focused on your children and your income can be the most purposeful thing you do — full stop. It doesn’t need to also be your most creative or expansive season; it can simply be the season that’s required of you. Every piece of what you’re living through now is preparing the next one, the same way building blocks lock in one at a time. You don’t have to see the whole structure yet. You just have to move in faith on what you know is correct right now, trusting that what comes next will be taken care of.

Affirmation: I trust that the next right step is already being prepared for me.

Your purpose doesn’t have to be a grand, public thing to be real, and it doesn’t have to be unpaid to be sacred. Right now, it might look like showing up for your family and doing work that provides for them well. That is enough.
