Let’s talk about something that affects so many of us as we age: the belief that our bodies will start to break down. Have you ever thought, “It’s just what happens when you get older”? If so, you’re not alone. Many people feel stuck in a cycle where injuries or physical limitations seem inevitable as the years go by. But here’s the truth—your mindset is the key to how your body ages!
How Beliefs About Aging Impact Your Health
During a recent live coaching call for our 2-Week Empowered Aging Course, a Healing Center member brought up an important question:
“I’m struggling with the consistent message that when you age, your body just breaks down and doesn’t work like it used to. I find myself in this pattern of injury and living out that phase that my body doesn’t move like it used to. It’s just something that happens with age. What do you recommend?”
This question touches on a belief that many of us carry without even realizing it. The idea that our bodies are destined to decline as we age is a powerful one—but it’s also a belief that you can change!
Shift Your Belief, Shift Your Body
The first step in changing how your body ages is to recognize that your belief is playing a foundational role in this process. If you’re convinced that your body is going to break down, your actions and habits will likely reflect that, leading to exactly what you fear.
So, how do you start to shift this belief? Here are some steps you can take right now:
1. Reframe Your Belief with Positive Affirmations
Start by rephrasing the limiting belief that “aging means decline.” Instead, try something like, “My body is staying healthy as I age, and I am inspired and motivated to make daily choices that support that.” This new belief acknowledges that while your body might change with age, you have the power to influence how it happens.
2. Make Choices That Support Your Health
Your daily choices play a huge role in how your body ages. If you neglect strength training or flexibility exercises, your body will experience more rapid decline. But it’s never too late to start! Begin with what your body is capable of now—whether that’s walking, yoga, or gentle stretching—and gradually build strength and flexibility.
Lizzie, a participant in the 2- Week Empowered Aging Course, shared:
I’m really experiencing the benefit of regular exercise. My attitude has totally changed. I had a real phobia for the gym. I used to go all the time but then one day I stopped. I switched what I was saying from to ‘now I’m done with my workout. It felt great.” … I have met a lot of new friends at the pool. Fresh friends is also a bonus. Typical for Type 1, I keep it light, fun and social! A win. Once I learned to see my Type better I could find the correct activities! Dancing is another fun activity which I enjoy. Now that I have cleared some of the negative patterns I am replacing them with better choices.
New Resources to Support Your Healthy Aging
I’ve been creating movement videos specifically designed to support your body as you age. These videos will be released every Monday and Friday in our new Empowered Aging Facebook group. This group is a free benefit for you. (Sigh up for the Empowered Aging newsletter to learn more). These are simple, gentle exercises you can do to maintain your strength and flexibility. My husband is also contributing Qigong videos every Wednesday, which will be a free resource for our Empowered Aging community.
You can also find the 28 Days of Healing Movement in my course, the Weight Loss Cure. These gentle movement videos are available year-round to all members of my Healing Center.
Take Action Now: Clearing Walks
Finally, if you find it challenging to change these ingrained beliefs about aging, consider doing a clearing walk—a process we use to release limiting beliefs that are stored in the body. (I have an 8 min video in the Healing Center that will teach you how to take a clearing walk.) During your walk, focus on the phrase, “My body just breaks down and wears out as I age.” Then, consciously replace it with, “I’m grateful for my healthy body that stays strong as I age. I’m inspired and motivated to make the daily choices that support that.”
This practice will help reprogram not just your mind but your body’s response to aging.
How you age is a choice, make a better choice!
Remember, your body listens to your beliefs. As you shift your mindset about aging, you’ll notice your body responding in kind. You have the power to age with strength and vitality.
