For millions of us, weight is a problem, but perhaps not in the way you might first think.
I believe our attitudes and approaches to weight management are often more of a problem than carrying a few extra pounds. When we feel low about who we see in the mirror, we buy into unrealistic and dangerous weight loss programs, fad diets, and useless supplements; then we beat ourselves up when they don’t work.
It’s a vicious circle of behavior, and it’s one I recognize all too well. As a young woman, I would diet furiously, only to lose heart when I didn’t get quick, short-term results. I turned to overeating as a comfort blanket, and the inevitable weight gain would follow.
There’s a whirlwind of negative emotions that can be tied to weight loss and willpower, and if you’re not careful, they can have a crushing impact on your self-esteem.
In my last article, I talked about the chakras that played a part in maintaining a healthy weight. Today, I’m going to tell you how you can start healing those chakras using Reiki and begin to control your weight in a healthy, meaningful and long-lasting way. The best part? We won’t be talking about carbs, calories, or diet plans at any stage!
What is Reiki?
If you’ve explored some of my other articles about the chakra system, you’ll already know that there are very clear links between the energy that flows through us and our emotional and physical selves.
While traditional medicine generally focuses on the physical, Reiki healing concentrates on our energy centers.
The Reiki we’re going to explore here involves laying your hands on or close to your body, using them to focus and manipulate the energy within us and around us.
This might sound strange if you’re new to the idea of Reiki and energy healing, but in actual fact, we manipulate energy like this all the time. The connection between our physical bodies and the energies around us is the reason it feels wonderful to hug a loved one, sing and dance to our favorite songs, or be around kind, positive people. Reiki simply gives us a way of controlling and influencing how we interact with our Chakra energy centers.
Why do we gain weight?
It’s often said that the key to weight loss is simply eating healthier food and getting more exercise.
In truth, this is over-simplifying the problem enormously. If we really want to understand how to lose weight, we need to think about some of the real underlying reasons people gain weight, and how we can make a meaningful difference to those problems.
Poor eating habits
Part of the problem with junk food is how immediately satisfying it feels. Salty, sugary, and unhealthy fatty foods trigger a similar pleasurable ‘reward’ response in your brain as some kinds of narcotics, so if you’re not feeling your best, a big tub of chocolate ice-cream can feel like a real pick-me-up.
The trouble is, our bodies come to expect the reward that comes from eating junk food, so it’s a hard habit to break, especially if you feel like you rely on these rewards to get you through your day.
Lack of exercise
Although physical activity is shown to be an important part of staying healthy, being sedentary through the day doesn’t mean you’re automatically going to gain body weight.
The excess weight tends to come when the amount of food we take in doesn’t match the amount of physical effort we expend each day. This is where it becomes absolutely vital that the food you eat is in response to what your body truly needs, rather than eating more than you need out of habit.
Poor quality sleep
Although the amount of sleep we need varies from person-to-person, it’s absolutely vital that we’re well-rested if we want to keep our physical and mental well-being in check.
There are thousands of reasons we might not be getting the amount or quality of sleep we need. Perhaps you’re up in the night looking after children? Maybe you’ve got worries that stop you falling asleep? Maybe your job means you keep unusual hours. If you’re not getting the rest you need, your appetite and hormone levels can sometimes have you reaching for the late-night snacks, leading to additional body fat.
What’s impacting your weight?
Perhaps you know why you’re struggling to maintain a healthy body weight; then again, perhaps it feels like no matter how hard you try, you just can’t get to a healthy weight.
The Reiki techniques I’m going to tell you about aren’t going to magically make you happy with your physique overnight.
Instead, they’re going to do something far better.
I’m going to teach you how to use Reiki to reprogram the energy that surrounds eating. When you do, you’ll be able to work towards identifying exactly what’s holding you back, before finding the energy balance you need to make a significant and lasting change to the person you see when you look in the mirror.
How does Reiki Healing Help with Weight Loss?
Using Reiki to help with weight loss helps you to work towards your goals in two significant ways.
Firstly, the technique I’m going to teach you is going to help you deal with the immediate desire many of us have to overeat or eat a lot of food that simply isn’t nourishing your body.
Secondly, I’m going to explain how Reiki will help you focus on the real issues that are preventing you from maintaining a healthy eating habit.
A Simple Reiki Practice to Support Your Weight Loss
Before you begin, it’s a good idea to find a quiet space where you won’t be interrupted for a few minutes.
You can sit or stand for this healing exercise, whichever you find to be the most comfortable. You might also want to make a note of the affirmation we’re going to be reciting and keep it somewhere you can see it from where you’re standing or sitting.
Start with a couple of deep breaths, hold the inward breath for a few seconds, then release it slowly.
This is the affirmation we’re going to be using to align and balance our Chakras:
“I’m experiencing an appetite for healthy foods that I only eat in amounts that support me in maintaining a healthy weight.”
- Starting at the Crown chakra, on top of your head, gently massage the scalp outwards in an ‘opening’ motion. This is going to help to start the energy flowing through you.
- Next, place one hand on your forehead and the other on the back of the head, activating the Third Eye Chakra. Hold your head like this for a moment and repeat the affirmation again: “I’m experiencing an appetite for healthy foods that I only eat in amounts that support me in maintaining a healthy weight.”
- Each time you speak these words out loud, you’re aligning your Chakra’s energy with this intention. I sometimes think of it as ‘reprogramming’ the energy that’s flowing through you.
- Move your hands down so one’s touching your tummy, with the other on your lower back. Repeat the affirmation again. This time you’re balancing your Sacral Chakra, which is closely connected to your stomach, a powerful influence on the feelings we get from eating.
- Next, move your hands down so you’re touching your tailbone at the base of your back, and your pelvic bone at the front. Repeat the affirmation again, breathing deeply as you do.
- Now, we’re going to perform some ‘figure eight’ movements from the Chakras we’ve just held, starting with the throat. We refer to them as figure eights because that’s the shape your hands will be making as your beckon the energy to and from your now-activated Chakras.
- Place your hands on your throat, then extend your open hands outward, dropping your wrists as your arms extend. Then, rotate your hands upwards and bring them back towards you. As you do recite the affirmation again, you’re drawing positive energy towards you and it will align with the intention you’re projecting.
- Repeat these figure eights through your Throat, Sacral, and Root Chakras again, drawing the energy from around you as you do.
- What Can You Expect to Experience?
Although it’s a simple practice, this kind of Reiki energy healing is powerful and really transforms the energy that flows through you. It is going to begin to realign your feelings towards the food you eat, and you can expect to be immediately less drawn to snacking, instead finding healthier eating habits and more wholesome food choices more appealing.
You might want to repeat the practice each day, perhaps before mealtimes, or even just as you need it; to help you break the habit of picking up quick, unhealthy foods. You might even find that your body doesn’t deal with unhealthy food as it has previously, so don’t be alarmed if you feel a little nauseous if you do reach for the junk food again.
Making a Lasting Difference to your Weight
If you want to make a lasting difference to your weight, this Reiki healing practice is a fantastic first step in the right direction, but it’s not a quick fix.
When it comes to weight, quick fixes don’t exist. The sooner you acknowledge that, the sooner you can move forward with healing the real reasons you struggle with your weight.
Reiki can support your weight loss effort, but more importantly, in the medium to long term, healing that’s more suited to your overall life situation can be the thing that helps you find the peace and balance you need to change your eating habits forever.
