The Power of Chakra Healing for Mind and Body

Do you feel off-balance? Is your mind always cloudy? Is your body tense and full of negative energy? If so, it’s time to check in with your chakras. Chakra healing can unblock your vital pathways to restore your natural energy flow.

Chakra healing is an ancient practice with roots as far back as 1500 BC. It encourages us to focus on the life force movement within us in order to remain healthy and open to the energy of the universe. Here’s how to use chakra balancing to heal your mind and body!

Chakra Basics

What are the chakras? The individual chakras are focal points between your physical body and your spiritual mind. These chakras are inextricably connected with the life force energy that animates your body.

When this energy is flowing freely through your chakras, you practically throb with vitality and exuberance. However, blockages can interfere with your energy flow and disturb your chakra balance.

The 7 Main Chakras and Their Purposes

The chakra system has seven main chakras and each is associated with certain physical and mental states of being. Ideally, the chakras work together in a seamless give-and-take that nourishes your individual life energy.

Here are the seven chakras and their purposes within your body.

Root Chakra

The root chakra or Muladhara is found at the base of your spine. The purpose is this chakra is to help you feel grounded and rooted as you move through the world. It is closely tied with emotions that involve security and safety.

Your Muladhara affects your physical balance and stamina, as well as your bones, glands, spine, teeth, and adrenal glands. Health conditions that are connected to the root chakra include low adrenal function, osteoporosis, spinal stenosis, and obesity.

Sacral Chakra

The sacral chakra is below your navel and about two inches into your body. Strongly linked to pleasure and sexuality, its health affects your relationships and your ability to remain open to new experiences as you age.

If you have fertility problems, they may be connected to your sacral chakra and its impact on your reproductive organs. This chakra’s health also affects your bladder, urinary tract, lower back pain, and kidneys.

Solar Plexus Chakra

The solar plexus chakra is located in the upper abdomen and stomach area. It involves a wide range of emotional states, like your confidence, self-esteem, empowerment, assertiveness, awareness, and the stability of your day-to-day feelings.

In your physical body, this chakra is closely tied to your stomach, the muscles of the digestive tract, and the labyrinth of your intestines. When you have frequent stomach aches, digestive issues, ulcers, gas, or nausea, this is the chakra to address.

Heart Chakra

Right above your heart is the heart chakra, which is tied to your overall sense of inner peace as well as your ability to feel the highest levels of exhilaration and love. It even affects your sense of compassion for others.

A blocked heart chakra is a huge problem. It puts you at risk of deep depression and serious physical illness. Work on keeping it unblocked, or you may be exposed to emotional pain, heart disease, lung disease, breast cancer, stiff joints, high blood pressure, and circulatory distress.

Throat Chakra

Your ability to communicate comes from an open throat chakra, located at the base of your throat. When it is blocked, you will find it very difficult to express yourself to other people, tell the truth about what you are feeling, and interpret what others are saying to you.

As its name indicates, it affects your throat and mouth. It also impacts your ears, and thyroid, which are located in the same area. This means an unhealthy chakra can contribute to hoarseness, laryngitis, ear infections, sinus pain, TMJ, and thyroid cancer.

Third Eye Chakra

Between your eyes is the third eye chakra, which is connected to perceptive insight and wisdom. If you are struggling to understand larger issues you are facing, or if you feel that you have no imagination or intuition, this is the chakra that needs healing.

The eyes and vision are connected to the third eye chakra, and it may also be tied to migraine headaches, seizures, insomnia, and neurological issues related to vision and interpretation of what’s in your visual field. Terrifying nightmares can also be related to a blocked chakra.

Crown Chakra

At the top of the head is the chakra of divine spiritual connection. When it is fully healthy and balanced, you are receptive to spiritual enlightenment. The brain, skull, and skin are affected by the health of your crown chakra.

An imbalance here can affect your pituitary gland, pineal gland, brain, and nervous system, and it can even cause a mental disorder to become much worse. Balance your crown chakra, and you are promoting body-wide health.

Seven Chakras and Seven Colors

The seven chakras are represented by seven colors, and by paying keen attention to these colors in your life, you can nurture the health of your chakras. The seven colors from head to toe are:

Violet: The Crown Chakra

Indigo: Third Eye Chakra

Blue: Throat Chakra

Green: Heart Chakra

Yellow: Solar Plexus Chakra

Orange: Sacral Chakra

Red: Root Chakra

I go into more detail about the meaning behind the seven chakra colors here.

The Opening and Closing of the Chakras

Chakras open and close due to the ongoing clearing and disturbance of the energy flow within the body. This is a cyclic flow that does not always have a clear cause-and-effect relationship or beginning and endpoint.

Think of it more as a loop, disk, or wheel, which makes sense because “chakra” is the Sanskrit word for “wheel.”

Chakra healing is based on the concept that there is a pathway of energy disruption that moves through the chakras and into physical symptoms within the human body. Here’s a common path this process follows for many people:

A small disturbance in your energy leads to tension and stress, which causes a blocked chakra, which creates further system disruption, which causes physical manifestations, which further disrupts your total body energy, which begins to block another chakra, and on and on.

Notice how it all began with a small disturbance, which launched body-wide damage. Without healing, you will be caught in an endless negative loop that leaves you feeling totally drained and unhealthy.

Chakra Healing Power for Mind and Body

Chakra healing is a very powerful energy defense system because it preserves so many vital aspects of your being: your attachment to reality, your interpersonal relationships, your physical health, your connection to the divine. Here’s how chakra balance affects the body.

Root Chakra

The root chakra is the foundational chakra that helps you feel grounded in personal power. Remember that both an overactive and underactive chakra are unhealthy for your body, mind, and spirit.

When it is overactive, you will feel that your tether to the world has been broken. This leaves you open to greediness and materialism. Underactive, and you will feel fearful and dependent on other people for your sense of self, which can lead to poor decision-making about your health care.

Sacral Chakra

Being overemotional is unhealthy for the body, and an imbalanced sacral chakra can be a contributor to this state. Those with a disturbance in this chakra may overstep boundaries, create drama, and engage in risky behavior that puts the physical self at risk.

A blocked chakra can even cause you to pursue negative and abusive relationships that put you in physical danger. It is no joke to say that a healthy chakra can save your life.

Solar Plexus Chakra

Anxiety and aggression are both tied to the solar plexus chakra, and both of these can lead to body-wide stress that reduces your lifespan. If you are being overly pessimistic or critical of yourself or others, consider that your chakra may need some healing.

This can also be true if you have gone the complete other direction, being a total doormat who is always giving in to others’ desires. You may struggle to maintain an optimal level of health or even to perform basic personal hygiene.

Heart Chakra

Have you ever felt that your heart was breaking? That sensation was the crumbling of your heart chakra, the seat of your loving energy.

When it is blocked or imbalanced, you will find it difficult to enjoy relationships or set appropriate boundaries. You may hold grudges that leave your entire body feeling pent up and tight. In fact, tight muscles in the chest can be a sign of a chakra that’s in dire need of healing.

Throat Chakra

Because this affects your ears, nose, and throat, a blockage here affects your ability to hear, smell, taste, speak your truth, and understand what you are sensing. You may feel painfully shy and closed off.

Or on the flip side, you may become a loudmouth and embarrass yourself. The chakra can even lead to damaging ear and sinus infections that persist for long periods, so it’s very important to keep this chakra clear.

Third Eye Chakra

Did you know a blocked third eye chakra can lead to hallucinations? This chakra affects your ability to make good judgments and see your life clearly.

A blocked chakra can cause you to be distrustful and make poor decisions that affect your well-being much further down the line. You might cancel doctor’s appointments or stop taking important medications purely because you lack the insight to see the bigger picture.

Crown Chakra

When this chakra is in need of healing, you may feel either totally lacking in spirituality or overly attached to the divine to the point of addiction. In fact, many addictive behaviors are attached to the crown chakra.

Keep this chakra healthy to maintain positive thinking, goal-setting, and daily habits that benefit your body and spirit. The health of your chakra is linked to the health of your entire being.

How to Heal Your Chakras to Unlock Their Power

Healthy chakras benefit your life force energy, or Chi, which nourishes and energizes your body. When all of your chakras are at full health and are balanced together, you will feel like a buoyant force in the universe, open to any possibility and secure in your sense of self.

However, it is quite common to feel that your chakras need some healing. In fact, healing your chakras is a life-long process that never ends. It’s a part of caring for yourself every day and staying fully in touch with your personal energy.

When you need to restore balance among your chakras, here are some time-tested methods to explore:

Meditation

Chakra meditation involves spiritual reawakening, healing, and balance of the energy flow within your body. Mindfulness is an important part of meditation and requires a careful balance between focus and relaxation.

One distinction between simple mindfulness and chakra meditation is that you will need to believe in the power of chakra meditation in order to benefit from it.

It’s about more than just observation and being aware of what is currently happening; you will need to actively but gently guide and direct the flow of your thoughts to interweave with the flow of energy in your body.

In guided meditation, you work with an instructor or trusted companion to move your focus as you meditate. This can be a very effective way to heal the chakras and restore their vitality.

Affirmations

Chakra affirmations are definitive positive statements that carry you toward chakra healing. They typically address a specific aspect of your physical or spiritual self, which correlates to the chakra with which you are struggling.

For example, if your heart chakra is blocked, you may need to practice affirmations that involve love, compassion, empathy, and self-care. You might say, “I accept myself for who I am, and I love myself deeply.”

Massage

Massage can clear your chakras by addressing the physical location of the chakra and moving energy to unblock passageways. As a massage therapist massages your body, energy is released to move through your body and release stubborn tension points.

For example, if you have been struggling with a blocked throat chakra, a massage in your neck and shoulders can create a sensation of release. Through careful massage, you may be able to ease pent-up tension and completely clear it from your body’s channels.

Color Vibration

Color is a vibratory quality of energy that may be perceived with your eyes but is also resonating in the world on multiple sensory levels. When you vibrate on the same wavelength as a color, you will feel a renewed vigor that corresponds to the hue.

Green, for example, is the color of the heart chakra. Open yourself up to love and compassion by incorporating more green into your wardrobe and adding plants to your living environment. Red resonates with the sacral chakra, so paint your bedroom walls red to vibrate with sensual passion.

Music

Music is used for chakra balance by either stimulating or calming, according to the current state of an imbalanced chakra. If your throat chakra is blocked, stimulating music may help you clear the blockage and begin to sing, communicate, and feel creative again.

On the other hand, soothing vibes can calm an overstimulated chakra. If an overactive third eye chakra, or Ajna, is giving you nightmares that prevent you from sleeping soundly, listen to quiet Tibetan music before bed for relief.

Energy Healers

An energy healer is someone who understands the flow of energy in the body and has the experience to help you effectively restore proper movement. They may have to perform movements, meditation, and relaxation techniques that allow the healing to be most effective.

Chakra Stones

Since ancient times, stones have been used to promote healing for the mind and body. Chakra stones connect to specific points in the body and focus the healing energy to restore flow.

Orange stones, like the mysterious Tiger’s Eye stone and the energizing Sunstone, can help your sacral chakra, which is associated with the color orange.

Hold one of these stones in your hand or wear it on a pendant around your neck, and you will find that it helps clear your sacral chakra and prevent it from becoming blocked again in the future.

Yoga

Yoga has so many wonderful benefits for the body. For healing, it can help you use postures to target certain areas of the body and stimulate healing.

For example, the Manipura, or solar plexus chakra, can be stimulated through the Boat Pose, or Navasana. This is a V-shape you hold with raised head and toes, balancing on the base of your spine as the “bottom of the boat.”

Essential Oils

The sense of smell is deeply tied to our emotions and spirit. To promote healing, incorporate essential oils into your environment.

Lavender has a calming, soothing effect and is closely tied to the throat chakra. It can help you relax if you are feeling worn out from public speaking or performing, renewing your ability to express yourself comfortably in the world.
